Young Kings Tutored By A King

Young Kings Tutored By A King - Varn Brown, Sr.

There’s a good reason that the Lord allows us to gain experience. He allows us to go through things little by little, line by line, precept by precept. When you wade through things, you come away with wisdom and knowledge to put into action. At least, you’re supposed to come away with good things you’ve learned to live by and other people can learn from. The Lord has graced me with some understanding and revelation that I’m excited to share with you today.

Things that I have noticed

Back in the day of the new movement of Armorbearing, the early 90’s, the body of Christ, in general, seemed to be pretty excited about the movement. I must be truthful about the whole thing. It was obvious from the start, some were and some were not. That’s just the way the world turns. My understanding about the whole matter, God was doing a new thing in his body and his children were excited about it.

Over the years, there were so many times, someone wrote into our ministry describing themselves sitting in the pew watching their pastor work and work themselves tired. The Spirit of Lord would say, “You’re their armorbearer, help them…” They would go on the search for anything about armorbearing. They would find us teaching and preaching about armorbearing with balance, with truth, with sincerity and ultimately with the Spirit of Christ.

Even so, at the same time, there were a few squirrely things going on with the new name that’s called armorbearer and still is. From life itself, we should all know by now that you don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. But, some are doing just that.

Rooted from Hebrew

By now, you probably know the word in Hebrew, it simply means to help, to serve and protect. It is a root word from the word Nasa. I’m pretty sure, some of the older, smaller, traditional religious organizations and ministries were having their issues with the just-born ministry called armorbearing that swept the body of Christ all across the world in the last decade.

They were saying, “Who are all those people in front and behind, hanging around the man of God? Years ago, the older ministries only had congregations of about 100 to 200 people. A good leader, probably almost by himself could handle it. But nowadays, it’s a bit different. The churches of this day are much larger.

The church Earma and I served in for two decades was at least ten thousand members at that time. Now, it’s one of their five locations. The leadership of this day has to have a new mindset of leading the congregation of thousands and tens of thousands.  I’m sure of it. They aren’t complaining about things done right from the Ministry of Helps. At least, I hope they aren’t.

Somehow, we forget that it’s a part of God’s appointment to the church.  Armorbearing is just an administration of Helps in the body of Christ. Remember, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you is a member of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, and those with gifts of healing, helping, administration, and various tongues.” —1 Corinthians 12:27,28 I must say armorbearing, just like any other administration of ministry can be done right. It is left to the leadership that’s willing to make sure that this new ministry is operating right in their local church.

Here’s the revelation

It’s God’s beginners’ ministry for armorbearers and servant leaders. It’s pretty simple. If you are not looking for it, you can miss it. I saw this great lesson and revelation as I wrote my new book, “The Character of King David.”

This revelation was displayed through the life of David himself. He progressed through the ranks. We shouldn’t be surprised because he was specifically called Saul’s armorbearer, the first noted one. I must admit when I first started serving as an armorbearer, years ago, I could only see the service that I rendered to my leader, at that time. Now that the Lord has taken me much farther and deeper in ministry, more has been revealed.

This function is now called “Servant Leadership.” Somewhere along the way, I realized I was doing these character studies of Captain Abishai, General Joab, Prince Jonathan and even King David himself for the people of God.

It’s a part of what I’ve been sent by God to do in this world. In other words, I do the best job I can do to equip the people of God to walk and grow in God’s character. It’s not just a book, a message, it’s the work of God through me.

This is the plan of what I feel the Spirit of God wants to do in the body of Christ in these days. Now, you know that God had to have more in mind than just a bunch of people following their leaders all around the place, carrying their Bibles.

In fact, the Spirit of the Lord wants to do the same thing with us, just like he did with his servant David. And we can title it, if need be, Servant Leader, Armorbearer or just helper. If you feel that’s more appropriate for you. I do know that this movement has already been in action for quite some time now.

God’s preparing young kings

This is what it’s all about, training up the next generation of giant slayers. You see, they are going to need every bit of character we help them achieve to handle the anointing God’s giving them and overcoming the giants of their generation.

The spirit of the Lord is after raising up kings from the start of young service. He’s after just in David’s day, young kings being tutored by a king, young pastors being tutored by pastors, young leaders being tutored by a great leader.

Don’t forget, as Samuel anointed David’s head with oil, he said to him that he would become Israel’s new King. Then David left and became Saul’s psalmist, armorbearer, chief bodyguard, captain in his army and so on, until eventually he became King. Just as the Prophet Samuel had foretold that God had said. This was not a coincidence; it was all God’s plan. So, we should consider God’s plan, not our own.

So what should we do?

I, humbly suggest, start with your whole church. You already have different levels of authority and delegated authority operating in your church. Begin to implement your armorbearers and servant leaders in that path. Start them out in a serving position and make sure that you have some hard stuff included for them to do. Hard work is healthy for us.

Some of the church has been known for only having girly men in it, let’s prove them wrong. Let them see that there are mighty men and women in the kingdom of God in these last days, even giant slayers.

In our books, we use David’s life as a template. Allow the young people to start out serving faithfully. As they show themselves faithful, promote them. Before you know it, they will have become candidates for a kingship. For some, that might be a few decades later, if it’s the Lord’s will. And yes, some started early and are on the fast track, just not too fast. Allow them time, for God to work with them and their character.

Well, that’s what it’s all about. Now the question is to you. Will you cooperate with the spirit of the Lord and raise up mighty men, women, and giant slayers?

The Lord’s servant,

Rev. Varn E Brown, Sr.
